India is one of the most diverse places in the world geographically,
religiously, culturally, and lingually. Religiously, Hinduism, the largest
religion in India accounts for 80% of the population; Islam, the second
largest religion, accounts for 13% of the population; Buddhism, Jainism,
and Sikhism taken together account for 3% of the population; and
Christianity accounts for 2% of the population. Other religions such as
Zoroastrianism and Judaism have a century’s long history in India.
Constitutionally, India is a secular and in practice the religious diversity
of India extends to highest levels of government. Currently, the Prime
Minister of India is a Sikh, the President of India is a Hindu, Vice
President of India is a Muslim and the chairperson of the ruling United
Progressive Alliance (UPA) is a Christian.

India has been home for centuries to all great religions of the world.Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has stated that religious tolerance and the ability to evolve, despite differences, is the basis of India. Swami Vivekananda says that what makes our civilization great is the fact that it is based on the idea of the co-existence of faiths – Sarva Dharma Sambhava. This notion implies that we have equal respect for all Dharma’s, for all faiths. Elaborating this idea Swami Vivekananda used the metaphor of many rivers flowing into one mighty ocean. He quoted from an ancient hymn to say:

“As the different streams having their sources in different places all mingle their water in the sea, sources in different tendencies, various though they appear, crooked or straight, all lead to Thee.”According to Manmohan Singh Swami Vivekananda said very aptly, “We believe not only in universal toleration, but we accept all religions as true.”

Indian social structure is very pleural in nature. Religious harmony and amity between different cultures in India has been observed. India is the place of origin of Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism. So, co-existence has been a part of faith in India. Hinduism, the largest Indian faith by population, is itself pluralistic and polytheist which gives each individual enough space to practice ones faith. Also, Buddha has been considered as one of the incarnations of Vishnu and worshipped by Hindus for years.

Symbols of religious harmony:

  • · Ajanta Caves in Maharashtra, India are rock-cut cave monuments dating from the second century, containing paintings and sculpture considered to be masterpieces of both “Buddhist religious art” and “universal pictorial art”. The caves are located just outside the village of Ajinṭha in Aurangabad District in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Since 1983, the Ajanta Caves have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

National Geographic reads, The flow between faiths was such that for

hundreds of years, almost all Buddhist temples, including the ones at

Ajanta, were built under the rule and patronage of Hindu kings.

  • · Akshardham temple: Nijanand is a hall devoted to the co-existence of world religions and contains information about the symbols, scriptures and prayers of Hinduism, Jainism, Christianity, and Islam. Unfortunately terrorists thought it only a Hindu temple and killed several innocent people.
  • · Kottayil Kovilakam stands as a testimony of religious amity where a church, mosque, temple and a synagogue peacefully co-exist.

Swami Vivekananda participated in World conference with total positive mind.

living in harmony’ meeting organized by the rotary club of secunderabad at the kowtha kamakoti kalyana nilayam sri jayendra saraswati swami jagadguru sankaracharya of the kanchi kamakoti peetam urged religious leaders to spread the message of peace, harmony and brotherhood also suggested that the bible, the quran, and the bhagavat gita be compiled into one book and distributed to the people, so that they can read the scriptures and learn about other religions.

Why we want religious harmony in the country?

After freedom of India still we are facing the problems of riots, fights & corruption. After getting freedom in 1947 the Pakistan was divided as a separate country. Now we have all the facilities & we have globalised, modernized from the all fields. We are developing day to day life activity. In India there are 28 states and we are from those 28 states. Because we feel we are from this state or from that state. If somebody asks us you are from where? We never say that we are from India but we always say that we are from up, Kerala, etc. why we never thought of saying this. We always said that we are from this state. We always forget that we are from different states but we belong to one country that is India. The same case happen with the cast. Everybody is ready to say our cast but nobody is interested to say that I am Indian. This is all about India the same thing happen with the globe.

We always feel or differentiate the people, color, their cast, their status. We always forget that we are humans first. Why we differentiate the people from people by their cast or by their status. Because we live in that kind of environment. We have to change this mentality or perspective to see the people.

When child take birth on the earth he is not Indian or Australian or Japanese either he is not the Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh when he gets birth on this earth first fall he is human being. Why he is human being because god gives birth to human being we make him as an Indian and then Hindu or Muslim. So if god is not making any partiality than why we are making this. I know this is the wrong question for the humans because it is our hereditary so we are doing. Ii think if all humans think that we are same. God gives us all the differentiatation. We have to accept all the things. God gives us different color, face, cast because our parents are the same think in that.

Now we have globalised market, people, and the most important thing is our country is developing. In this surrounding the need of religious harmony can be happen. Because now everybody known’s about the globalization, about the market an about the people. Everything is important for the country. If religious harmony happens everybody will be treated as a common people. All the creatures, people, cast and color will not affect the society. We can make the society where all the people, creatures live together and live better.

I think now we do not think about the globe. First we have to change our country than will automatically change the view of globally. If we are successful to change the inner problems and the views of people. We can change the views of globe. In our country there are lots of problems. Now we can change the perspective of the peoples. It will be better to change our views first than we can change the views of others. By this we can make that harmony where all people can live together a make our earth more beautiful and peaceful. It will help to grow in a faster rate.

We can. We will.
